Neve Sha’anan – the neighborhood shaped like a menorah in the heart of Tel Aviv

In the heart of southern Tel Aviv lies a unique architectural gem that few are familiar with: the Neve Sha’anan neighborhood, designed in a layout resembling a menorah, an ancient and deeply significant Jewish symbol.

The idea behind the design

In the 1920s, a group of pioneers, visionaries, and young entrepreneurs set out to establish a modern neighborhood that would provide high-quality and accessible housing. They were joined by an architect who designed the complex and chose to give it a distinctive character: streets laid out in a pattern resembling a menorah, making the neighborhood unique on a national scale.

Streets in the shape of a menorah

At the center of the design stood Levinsky Street, which served as the “shamash” of the menorah. From it branched out six smaller streets, similar to the menorah’s arms connected to the central candle. This layout not only created a distinctive design language but also reflected the desire to strengthen the sense of community, order, and shared vision within the growing city.

Neve Sha’anan Today

Over the years, the neighborhood has undergone numerous changes. Its proximity to both the old and new central bus stations brought in diverse communities, immigrants, and foreign workers. Today, Neve Sha’anan is a multicultural neighborhood, rich in street food from around the world, unconventional nightlife, and a variety of human stories.
And yet, a look at the neighborhood from above still reveals the original menorah pattern – a living testament to the architectural boldness and vision of its founders.

Why is it still relevant today?

Neve Sha’anan tells the story of Tel Aviv: a city born from a blend of creativity, dreams, and boldness. Even if its current appearance differs from the original vision, the spirit of innovation and vibrant life still endures. It represents a fascinating connection between an inspiring past and a dynamic, evolving present.
